2020 is like no other year in our lifetime.
As COVID-19 continues to shape our world, faith communities and other faith organizations are being looked to for help, hope, and health. Americans over 65, like those in every other age group, are struggling to avoid infection. What is fact and fiction about older adults, the fastest growing generation in the United States? How can churches, temples, and community groups respond to the needs of this age group?
On Monday, September 21st, a special three-hour conference will be held by faith leaders will focus on best practices to improve how we respond to the older members of our communities. In a panel discussion for faith leaders, clergy, regional ministers in metropolitan Southern California in which leaders of three older adult ministries in congregational settings will share their varying approaches, lessons learned, and resources to better address the spiritual needs of aging congregants. Rev. Todd Leonard, Senior Pastor, Glendale City Church in Glendale, CA, is co-founder of the congregation’s Seniors Academy.
Rev. Steve Herder, M.Div., Associate Pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks, leads the congregation’s comprehensive Senior Adult Ministries (SAM) Team, which both engages and serves nearly 380 older adult members.
Cindy Wright, MA, serves as the Minister of Care and Mature Adults at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, a position she’s enjoyed for the past 31 years. She finds great joy in loving and serving God’s oldest children in the church and community.
Moderator: Dr. Cordula Dick-Muehlke, Ph.D. is a consultant in aging and dementia and licensed psychologist who co-directs the Spirituality and Aging Certificate Program sponsored by New Theological Seminary of the West.
